Each year, in the U.S. alone more than 200,000 children go to hospital emergency rooms with injuries associated with playground equipment. Most injuries occur when a child falls from the equipment onto the ground and the most common injuries include fractures, spinal injuries and head injuries. Many of these injuries can be prevented
Inadequate maintenance of equipment often results in injuries on playgrounds. The safety of playground equipment and its suitability for use depend on good inspection and maintenance. A comprehensive maintenance program should be developed and all equipment should be inspected frequently for any potential hazards and for corrosion or deterioration.
